Advent Wreath Making

The entire parish is invited to enter the Season of Advent with the practice of lighting an Advent Wreath and joining in prayer. On Sunday, November 20 at 11:45 am come and create a fragrant wreath with candles for use in your home. This is a great activity whether your household is one, two, or many people. And it's simple: You begin with a metal wreath base, then add fresh greenery from Oregon, add candles, and you're set! We'll even have prayers for you to take home. A $20 donation will gladly be accepted (only $10 if you already have a wreath base so don't forget to bring it), but everyone can participate regardless of funds. Light refreshments will be provided. Historical Exhibit and Lecture on Ralph Adams Cram at All Saints Parish on October 30

"All Saints Retrospective: 1894-1926" - an exhibit of materials drawn from the church's archives highlighting the early years of All Saints Parish - will open on October 30 at 12 noon in the Guild Room. A lecture by noted architect Douglas Shand-Tucci on Ralph Adams Cram, the architect who designed All Saints Church, will follow at 12:15 pm. These events are open to the public at no charge.

Many thanks to Chris Newth, Art Coordinator, for assembling the exhibit that includes a drawing of the exterior of the church with a tower that was never constructed; a letter of consecration done in the style of an illuminated manuscript; an historic print of Corey House on property where All Saints is now; an obituary notice of Mr. Corey from about 1860; a document from All Saints' founders; a photo of the old Brookline Casino building; Cram's building proposal booklet; and a service leaflet from the laying of the cornerstone.

What Is Education for Ministry?

If you'd like to know who came first, Moses or the Macabees ... If you'd really like to know what happened on the way to Jericho ... if you would like to spend time with others to deepen your understanding of ministry and heritage, EFM could be for you.

The Education for Ministry program at All Saints begins in September and is open to all. The course is designed for lay people who want to explore theology in a serious and spirit filled way. In year one of the series, we will study The Hebrew Scriptures.

Each session consists of opening prayer, discussion of assigned readings, a Theological Reflection exercise, and closing prayer or devotion. As summarized in the EFM prospectus:

"Students belong to small 'communities of learning' in which the events of each person's life may be examined in the light of the materials being studied. While the course materials provide substantial academic content, the focus of the program is life as ministry."

For more information, explore the EFM website at www.sewanee.edu/EFM or contact Laura Vennard, course mentor for All Saints at 617-332-8924, or email:
lvennard@housinginv.com.

The course will meet Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm beginning in February 2006. You are invited to come to an information session on Tuesday, November 8, 7:00-8:15 pm.

Unemployment and Underemployment Spiritual Support Group

Are you currently on the quest for a new job as well as a supportive network? Come visit the Unemployment and Underemployment Spiritual Support group. The group meets on the second Thursday of each month from 7:00 to 8:30 am with coffee, juice, and bagels served. The next dates are November 10 and December 8.

Using an African method of Bible study, group members will reflect upon how this week's gospel passage affects their lives today. The group will also spend time checking in and sharing networking advice. Many members have found the group helpful in restoring and maintaining their cheer, hope, and perseverance through the job search. Says one participant, "It made me look at the day with new eyes."

The Rev. David Killian notes that "Being unemployed or underemployed causes us to question our worth, value, and self esteem. By coming together for prayer and Bible study we reestablish a sense of our true identity as God's children. The group helps us to connect and support one another. We leave refreshed, renewed, and strengthened for the task ahead. The group is a valuable caring resource for those who are in job transition."
