Education for Ministry

If you'd like to know who came first, Moses or the Macabees ... If you'd really like to know what happened on the way to Jericho ... if you would like to spend time with others to deepen your understanding of ministry and heritage, EFM could be for you.

The Education for Ministry program at All Saints begins in February and is open to all. The course is designed for lay people who want to explore theology in a serious and spirit filled way. In year 1 of the series, we will study The Hebrew Scriptures.

For more information, explore the EFM website at www.sewanee.edu/EFM or contact Laura Vennard, course mentor for All Saints at 617-332-8924, or email: lvennard@housinginv.com.

The course will meet Monday evenings at 7:00 pm beginning in February 27, 2006.

Holy Baptism will be celebrated next on Sunday, January 8, The Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord, at 10:30 am. If you are interested in making arrangements for baptism, please contact the Rector at 617-738-1810, ext 14 or rectord@allsaintsbrookline.org.

Parents with Small Children Group meets in the Nursery, Mondays 4:15-5:15 pm. Contact the church office for more information.

The next social get-together of the gay and lesbian Saints will be a holiday party at the home of Colin Johnstone and John Fong, Saturday December 10. Please contact Colin if you would like to be included in the group: DrCJVet@aol.com.

Men's Group will meet January 7 & 21 at 8:00 - 9:15 a.m. to discuss The Life of David by Robert Pinsky. Bagels, juice and coffee will be served. Copies of the book are available in the Guild Room. For information, contact Peter Stringham: peter.stringham@gmail.com or David Killian, rectord@ allsaintsbrookline.com.

Unemployment and Underemployment Spiritual Support Group

Are you currently on the quest for a new job as well as a supportive network? Come visit the Unemployment and Underemployment Spiritual Support group. The group meets on the second Thursday of each month from 7:00 to 8:30 am with coffee, juice, and bagels served.

The next date is December 8.

Women's Book Group

The Women's Book Group will meet on January 14 and 28 to discuss Parker J. Palmer's The Active Life: A Spirituality of Work, Creativity, and Caring. This will be a good follow up to God's Politics because it deals with integrating our spirituality with our whole lives.

From the back of the book: "The Active Life is Parker J. Palmer's deep and graceful exploration of a spirituality for the busy, sometimes frenetic lives many of us lead. Telling evocative stories from a variety of religious traditions, including Taoist, Jewish, and Christian, Palmer shows that the spiritual life does not mean abandoning the world but engaging it more deeply through life-giving action. He celebrates both the problems and potentials of the active life, revealing how much they have to teach us about ourselves, the world, and God."

Please read the preface and the first four chapters for January 14 and chapters 5-8 for January 28. Meetings are at 8:30 am in the Guild Room.

In February we will read Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt by Anne Rice. This novel fictionally develops Jesus' life as a child and adolescent. It should be good light reading for those snowy winter months. We will meet February 11 and 25. Please read to page 171 and the end of chapter 16 for February 11, and to the end of the book for February 25.

For more information, contact Lu Bunting, the new Book Group facilitator, at mlbunting@mac.com.

Donate flowers to honor a loved one or to celebrate a special occasion such as a wedding, anniversary, birthday, or graduations. We seek donors for Sundays from September to June. To schedule a date, please contact Doreen Vittori at 617-566-5800.

Via Media Is Coming to All Saints in January

Via Media, an exciting new video presentation of the basic tenets of Christianity from an inclusive, Episcopal approach to scripture, traditions, and reason, will be offered at All Saints on Wednesdays at 7:00-8:45 pm, beginning on January 25. Via Media leads participants to a broader view of the journey of faith and the role that the Church can play in society.

Via media is a powerful resource for building Christian community, bringing people into the Church who have felt alienated or unwelcome. Via Media will form the heart of the Journeys course that is offered for all who wish to be baptized, confirmed, or received into the Episcopal Church. For more information, please contact David Killian at rectord@allsaintsbrookline.org or Leslie Sterling at ammaleslie@earthlink.net. For more information about via media, visit: www.everyvoice.net/viamedia.
