Teeters Honored

On Sunday, October 16, at 3:00 pm, in All Saints Music Room, Donald Teeters will be honored by the Choral Arts New England (CANE) Board of Directors with their 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award. He is the twelfth choral conductor to be so honored. Previous recipients include a roster of virtually all the principal choral directors who came to prominence in New England in the 20th century. CANE administers annual grants awarded by the Alfred Nash Patterson Choral Foundation. Patterson was a pioneer in energizing the Boston choral scene in the years immediately following World War II. He was also a mentor of Donald Teeters, naming him associate conductor of Chorus pro Music in 1964, and giving him his first choral conducting opportunities in Boston. At the October event, grants will be presented to several deserving New England choral groups, including one to The Boston Cecilia, of which Teeters is long-time conductor.

RECYCLING 'old' CELL PHONES Now thru September, as an on-going fundraiser for Pilgrimage 2005, we're collecting all your 'old' cell phones. Our GOAL is to raise $1000 - by $3 to $100 per phone. Did you know? There are more than 100 million used cell phones in the US, and most are replaced and discarded every 12 to 18 months. Please check around your household and with extended family. Ask around your neighborhood - maybe at your office! This will help cut down on the clutter in your home and benefit the environment. And, 100% of the funds go to our Pilgrims present and future. (FYI: We do not need accessories - no car chargers, earpieces, or re-chargers.) Just bring all the used phones to the boxes at church. Thank YOU!

Women's Book Circle & Men's Group
Take a NEW twist - sharing conversations together

You are invited to join a group of women and men discussing the book God's Politics: Why the Right Gets it Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get it by Jim Wallis. Wallis offers a clarion call to make both religious communities and our government accountable to the key values of love and justice, reconciliation, and community that Jesus taught. These are at the core of what many of us believe, Christian or not. We hope that discussing the book will offer a way to talk about the often 'charged' moral issues with people who have different views than our own - people who may be in our own families and are could certainly be our parishioners and neighbors. No one political voice or party will be promoted. We all expect to be challenged! Our conversations will attempt to discuss the core issues in our lives as people of faith in an increasingly adversarial political climate. We share leadership/facilitation of the groups. Snack, juice, and coffee will be provided and we share this hospitality and cost as well.

This best selling book is available at your local bookseller and for purchase in the Guild Room. Please browse the book in advance of the first meeting, but you do not need to have completed the book by then.

Four Saturday mornings:
Men only: September 17 & October 1 @ 8:00 am
Women only: September 17 & October 1 @ 8:30 am.
Co-ed group: October 15 & 29 @ 8:15 am

Everyone is welcome. For information on the Women's Book Circle, please contact Stefani Schatz at 617-738-1810 x13. For information on the Men's Group, contact Peter Stringham at peter.stringham@gmail.com Please let us know if you need childcare.

What Is Education for Ministry?

If you'd like to know who came first, Moses or the Macabees ... If you'd really like to know what happened on the way to Jericho ... if you would like to spend time with others to deepen your understanding of ministry and heritage, EFM could be for you.

The Education for Ministry program at All Saints begins in September and is open to all. The course is designed for lay people who want to explore theology in a serious and spirit filled way. In year one of the series, we will study The Hebrew Scriptures.

Each session consists of opening prayer, discussion of assigned readings, a Theological Reflection exercise, and closing prayer or devotion. As summarized in the EFM prospectus: "Students belong to small 'communities of learning' in which the events of each person's life may be examined in the light of the materials being studied. While the course materials provide substantial academic content, the focus of the program is life as ministry."

For more information, explore the EFM website at www.sewanee.edu/EFM or contact Laura Vennard, course mentor for All Saints at 617-332-8924, or email:
lvennard@housinginv.com.

The course will meet Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm September 2005 to June 2006. The first session will meet Tuesday, September 27 at All Saints. $340 course fee for one year. Scholarships available.

Unemployment and Underemployment Spiritual Support Group meets at All Saints for breakfast on the second Thursday of the month, 7:00-8:30 am. We will meet next on September 8 and October 13. For more information, contact David Killian at 617-738-1810, x14 or rectord@allsaintsbrookline.org.

Blessing of Animals on October 9

The Book of Genesis tells the beautiful story: God saw that all creation was good. The creatures that share the planet with us give glory to God by their diversity, beauty and mystery. Psalm 148 speaks of all creation praising God. A hallmark of Celtic spirituality is its emphasis on God's presence in creation. St. Francis of Assisi in the twelfth century greeted his fellow creatures as brothers and sisters and saw them as a reflection of God's goodness.

We will observe "St. Francis Day" on October 9 when we have our annual blessing of animals during the 10:30 am service. Please bring your pets to church! Yes, you can bring your cat, dog, bird, rabbit, snake or fish with you to church on October 9. Pets will be blessed individually after the liturgy and each household will receive a certificate of blessing. If you choose not to bring your pet, you may bring a photo to be blessed. Special pet-friendly treats will be available at the social hour. If you are allergic to animals, we recommend attending the Saturday 5:00 pm or Sunday 8:00 am liturgies which will be "pet-free." Please make sure your pets are either on leash, in carrier, or properly contained. There will be pews designated for seating with different pets.
