Please note that the we are now using the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) reading.

In the Collect, we pray: Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

The reading from 1 Kings tells the story of King Solomon's prayer for wisdom: "'Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people?' It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. God said to him, 'Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, I now do according to your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you. I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor all your life; no other king shall compare with you. If you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your life.'" (1 Kings 2:10-12; 3:3-14)

Psalm 84 expresses the prayer of a pilgrim entering the holy temple:

"How dear to me is your dwelling, O LORD of hosts!
My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the LORD;my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.
The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young;
by the side of your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God.
Happy are they who dwell in your house! they will always be praising you.
Happy are the people whose strength is in you! whose hearts are set on the pilgrims' way.
Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of springs,
for the early rains have covered it with pools of water.
They will climb from height to height, and the God of gods will reveal himself in Zion.
LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; hearken, O God of Jacob.
Behold our defender, O God; and look upon the face of your Anointed.
For one day in your courts is better than a thousand in my own room, and to stand at the threshold of the house of my God than to dwell in the tents of the wicked."

The epistle to the Ephesians employs the metaphor of battle armor to exhort the Christian to right conduct: "Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." (Ephesians 6:10-20)

The Gospel John teaches that Jesus is the bread of life: "Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever." (John 6:56-69)

Christ, the bread of life, is present to feed and nourish us in the holy sacrament. I invite you to join us for the Holy Eucharist this Saturday at 5:00 pm and Sunday at 10:30 am.

Sincerely,

Rector
