Dear Parishioners and Friends,
Lent has begun. This holy season is a time to deepen our relationship with God and grow in our love of neighbor. We will be assisted in our Lenten Reflection by the Rev. Henri J.M. Nouwen, in excerpts taken from his daily meditations on the Prodigal Son. To read his reflection in our parish leaflet, This Week, please click here.
This Sunday, the second Sunday in Lent, the teenagers in our parish who work with homeless people at City Reach will give the sermon at the 10:30 am service. The teens will spend an evening this week working with the homeless in the Boston Common.
We invite you to join us for the Wednesday evening Lenten program of worship, a shared meal, discussion of "Lost & Found: Forgiveness and the Prodigal Son" and Compline. For information, please click here.
Thank you to all who contributed to provide medical care, food, water, clothing, and shelter to the people of the Haiti. If you wish to make a donation online, please click on Partners in Health, Episcopal Relief and Development, Oxfam America and the Sisters of St. Margaret.

O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT
In the reading from Genesis, Abram has a vision of the people of the covenant: "Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your descendants be." And he believed the LORD; and the LORD reckoned it to him as righteousness. (Genesis 15:1-12,17-18)
Psalm 27 is a prayer of trust in God's protection: "The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid ... Though an army should encamp against me, yet my heart shall not be afraid; and though war should rise up against me, yet will I put my trust in him. One thing have I asked of the LORD; one thing I seek; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life … For in the day of trouble he shall keep me safe in his shelter; he shall hide me in the secrecy of his dwelling and set me high upon a rock."
In the reading from Philippians, Paul exhorts the Christian community to recognize their true identity as children of God: "Our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved." (Philippians 3:17-4:1)
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus compares his love for the people to that of a mother hen: "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!" (Luke 13:31-35)
The holy season of Lent is a time to draw closer to God in prayer, self-discipline and service of others. Please join us for the Holy Eucharist this Saturday at 5:00 pm and this Sunday at 10:30 am.
Sincerely,

David A. Killian
