all saints weekly

August 18, 2010

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

The All Saints Weekly is a spiritual resource for your use throughout the week. The Weekly provides a preview of the Scripture readings for the coming weekend and information about programs of interest. We provide links to spiritual resources that you may access on the All Saints website, such as sermons and prayers. For The Rev. Kim Hardy's sermon on August 15, please click here.

Many of you have spoken to me about my Study Tour to Israel July 26-August 3. We visited ancient sites sacred to Jews, Muslims, and Christians and had informative discussions with Israeli and Arab leaders about prospects for peace. To visit the blog to see daily reports of our Study Tour, please click here.

As we look forward to the fall, I call your attention to the mini-course "Learning to Pray" that Peter Stringham and I will present on Thursdays September 16 and 23 at 6:45 pm. To download the flyer for this course, please click here. Peter and I will lead an ongoing Meditation Group every Thursday at 6:45 pm, starting September 30. You can download the flyer for the Meditation Group by clicking here. A course, "Spiritual Guides for All Seasons" will begin on September 30 at 7:30 pm. To download a flyer, please click here.

Most Sundays we use the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) reading, but this coming Sunday we will use the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) version.

Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THIS WEEKEND

In the Book of Isaiah, the prophet says that God will establish a foundation stone that will withstand death and corruption: "Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, See, I am laying in Zion a foundation stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation: 'One who trusts will not panic.' And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plummet; hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the shelter. Then your covenant with death will be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol will not stand; when the overwhelming scourge passes through you will be beaten down by it." (Isaiah 28:14-22)

Psalm 46 is a prayer of trust in God's protection: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea; though its waters rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble at its tumult. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be overthrown; God shall help her at the break of day ... 'Be still, then, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth.'"

The Epistle to the Hebrews speaks of God's covenant that will not be shaken: "You have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel ... Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe; for indeed our God is a consuming fire." (Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-29)

In the Gospel of Luke Jesus tells his disciples to enter through the narrow door of love and compassion: He said to them, "Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able. When once the owner of the house has got up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, 'Lord, open to us,' then in reply he will say to you, 'I do not know where you come from.' ... Indeed, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last." (Luke 13:22-30)

Please join us for the Holy Eucharist Saturday at 5:00 pm and Sunday at 10:30 am.
