Ministries, Committees, and Opportunities to Serveat All Saints Parish2006-2007
Dear Friends, When I talk to the volunteers from All Saints Parish who cook a meal in our kitchen, transport it to St. John's Church on Bowdoin Street in Boston, and serve it to over 100 homeless or marginalized people there, I am no longer surprised when they tell me, "I get more out of this than I give." These volunteers also tell me: "It is a great privilege to do something that makes a difference in people's lives. It is a concrete action that makes the world a better place." This is the experience of giving and serving others: we get more than we give and it is a privilege to make a difference in people's lives. This section on our web site, Serve, presents many opportunities to make a difference in people's lives. Serve describes ways that you can use your time and abilities to connect with God and one another to do good in the world. As you explore this section, pause and consider how you might choose to use the gift of your time and talent to serve others in Christ's name. When volunteers from All Saints visit an elderly resident at Goddard House, participate in bible study with the prisoners at the Boston Pre-release Center, prepare a meal for the homeless at St. John's on Bowdoin Street, build a home for a family in Dorchester with Habitat for Humanity, assist the rebuilding efforts on the Gulf Coast after Katrina, and work with other congregations in the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization for affordable health care they advance God's mission of healing and reconciliation. This section describes ways that you can give of yourself and receive a precious gift in return: the privilege of making the world a better place. Please contact the coordinators listed for more information. Thank you for sharing God's love within and outside of our parish throughout the year. Faithfully,
David A. Killian, Rector
Servings begins with FaithAll Saints Parish exists to help people connect to God and their neighbor. We express this connection at worship when we are joined with our risen Christ to offer praise and thanksgiving for our life in God. Nourished by the Holy Eucharist, we move to put our faith into action. "Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord" (Book of Common Prayer, page 366). Serving God's people is an expression of our faith. The Bible records God's covenant with the human race. In the book of Genesis, God "works" for six days and then "rests." The divine model of six days of "work" and one day of "rest" on the Sabbath was given to the Hebrew people as a model for their spiritual growth. It was a way of being faithful to their covenant with God. It is a model of how to serve God and achieve spiritual growth and balance in our busy world today. The activities of our parish express our faith and worship of God and our commitment to serve one another and build up the human family. The opportunities to serve are organized around the parish's three major objectives: Spirituality, Sharing, and Stewardship. They are accessible through the following links:
