A Prayer for Massachusetts

Bless, O Lord, the fish in the sea, emblems of
Thine own Son, and like Him given for the
sustenance of life. Bless the crook of sand cape
curving out upon that sea to fold in safety the
Pilgrims who crossed the deep
for Thy salvation.

Bless the harbors and hills to which they came,
who fled starvation or oppression or a mean
spirit. Bless, O Heavenly Father, the goodly
land that was their refuge; the farms and schools
and lofty ships builded there, and the golden
dome presiding over the brave heritage
of patriot fathers and mothers.

Bless the commonwealth thus established, that
her people, daring ever to venture in Thy
Name, may not fail to reach the haven of Thy
mercy and be renewed in the quest of life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The Very Rev. Francis B. Sayre, Jr., Dean Emeritus, Washington National Cathedral.
