November 5, 2007 Dear Parishioners and Friends, Please join us for worship this weekend: the Celtic Holy Eucharist Saturday at 5:00 pm, the 10:30 am Worship Service with Choir and Prayers for Healing, and the Sunday Evening Contemplative Holy Eucharist at 6:00 pm. THEME FOR THE TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Today's readings affirm our Christian belief that at death life is not ended, but changed. In the Collect, we pray: "God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen." The reading from Job asserts "I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another." Psalm 17 is prayer of trust: "I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me; incline your ear to me and hear my words. Show me your marvelous loving-kindness, O Savior of those who take refuge at your right hand from those who rise up against them. Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me under the shadow of your wings. . . ." In the reading from 2 Thessalonians Paul asks prayers "so that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly and be glorified everywhere, just as it is among you" and Paul affirms his trust in God: "The Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, that you are doing and will go on doing the things that we command. May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ." In the Gospel reading from Luke, Jesus affirms the resurrection of the dead: "Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection." As the days grow shorter and the nights become longer, our minds may turn to thoughts of our mortality. The teaching of Scripture is clear: God is faithful and God will not forsake us at death. God will transform our earthly bodies and call us to eternal glory. We come together in worship to express our thanks to God, the eternal Giver of life, and to strengthen one another in faith. Sincerely,
David A. Killian * * * * * Worship Services for the Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Pentecost, November 10-11, 2007 Saturday, November 10, at 5:00 pm: Preacher: Dr. Christian Brocato * * * * * Weekend and Mid-Week Worship Schedule |
